The UMass Fossil Fuel Divestment Campaign is a student-run campaign working towards full divestment of the university system’s endowment from the fossil fuel industry. We believe that because this is our money and that we are paying to attend UMass, it is our right to have a say in where this money is going. We don’t think these investments agree with the university’s claim to being a sustainable campus or that they promote the values expressed by the student population.
We believe that the fossil fuel industry is not only the main contributor to climate change, but that they are also contributing to social injustices around the world.
We propose that our money be reinvested in local and regional economies, socially responsible companies, and projects on our campuses and across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that promote social justice and fight climate change.
As of 2016 our campaign is working hard to build student power and achieve full divestment in the near future. The university system recently divested $400,000 from coal, which was a huge win for us. Divesting from coal was a big step in the right direction, but we urge them to divest the rest.
